Distance Education - Faculty Resources

Online Review Committee (ORC)

The Online Review Committee (ORC) Committee is responsible for ensuring all courses meet accepted national standards for online course development. NNMC uses Quality Matters (QM) as a guide for online course development.

Online course reviewers will review the course to evaluate whether or not the course meets 85% of QM Standards, and, where appropriate, provide comments and feedback on the quality, flow, and cohesiveness of course design. Members work under the direction of the Distance Education Committee.

In order to become an ORC Reviewer, the following criteria must be met:

  1. The ORC member is credentialed to teach online at NNMC (See Credentials for Faculty Teaching Distance Learning Courses).
  2. Evidence of an online course review and approval at NNMC (See Online Course Review and Approval Process).
  3. Attend sessions with Certified QM Peer Reviewer.
  4. Evidence of an in-depth understanding of QM Standards and guidelines. This criterion can be met in a variety of ways. The following are examples, which are illustrative and not exhaustive, of how this criterion can be met:
  • Successful completion of the NNMC Professional Development Program (PD 101, 102, &103)
  • Successful completion with a grade of B or higher of the following courses: Central New Mexico Community College’s (CNM)* TLOL 1010 Introduction to Teaching and Learning Online (2 credits) and TLOL 1015 Online Curriculum Design and Instruction (3 credits) courses will satisfy the requirement for training
  • Successful completion of the CNM’s Certificate of Online Teaching and Learning (11 credit certificate)
  • Recognition as a QM-Certified Peer Reviewer or Master Reviewer
  • Successful completion of QM Teaching Online Certificate (TOC)
  • Completion of a program of study of online teaching and learning that is based on QM Standards

Other Higher Ed Institutions may have equivalent courses and/or certificate programs similar to NNMC’s and may be acceptable. The ORC will determine course equivalency. However, the following examples are ineligible:

  • Taking a 1- 2 hour workshop on QM Standards is an example of training that will not fulfill this requirement.
  • These criteria will take effect for summer semester 2020 online course reviews. Current ORC members who do not meet criteria #3 have 12 months to fulfill these criteria. They may continue to participate in online course reviews that have 2 reviewers.
